Neomercazole (carbimazole) is a drug you have been given to control overactivity of your thyroid gland. Side effects are uncommon and the drug is safe, provided you follow these instructions:
Very occasionally the drug can impair the production of white blood cells or blood platelets, which are necessary to defend the body against infections and to form blood clots. If this occurs, stopping the drug immediately allows the production of these cells to resume.
The earliest signs that the drug may be affecting the white cells is a SORE THROAT, MOUTH ULCERS, EXCESSIVE BRUISING or a SKIN RASH. If you get any of these, you should immediately stop taking the tablets. You should then get a TOTAL WBC COUNT and PLATELET count done the same day. If the result is normal, you may continue to take the tablets again.
Of course sore throats, mouth ulcers, and skin rashes are very common. Most likely if you get one of these, it is not due to the drug. However the only safe action is to stop the drug until you have had the result of the blood test.
